when i was younger my mom would always come here to buy a bunch of red bean buns. now that i'm older, i still find myself going here to buy these delicious breads. i have cravings for the meronpan (my favorite) pretty often, but unfortunately i'm never in the arlington heights area. their selection is pretty basic, but i'm fine with that. good prices and very polite staff !!

If you miss Japanese bakery breads and danishes, I recommend Crescent (it beats Hippo House inside of Mitsuwa). Their kuri-mu pan and melon pan remind me of being in Japan. And the square bread loaves are addictive! The crusty ears with the slightly chewy moist soft center. Thank goodness I still love white bread. You'll never be able to give it up after you've tasted this stuff.

Excellent, soft, loaves of Japanese style shoku-pan. We only get bread here. They also have beautifully lined up kashi-pan. I love their anpan and an-donuts!!!

Portions are small but, for the price they charge which is inexpensive for super delicious real Japanese style Bento Boxes it's well worth it! The pastries here are really tasty also!

Melon buns! The boo, his bro and I stopped in here after a brief but fruitful stint at the sushi & Korean restaurant 2 doors over where even walking in you could smell the baking buns from Bakery Crescent. My boo spent the month of April in Japan and a from what I've heard, basically lived off sushi and baked buns similar to the ones sold here, so naturally, we just HAD to stop in so he could get his fix of Nippon-style nibbles. The dude chose 3 items to split between the three of us, the chosen trois wouldn't have been my picks but all were surprisingly good. I would've gone with something a bit more chocolatey, or even the the crazy looking corn bun, but the guy got the red bean, the melon and the creme one which he knew I would have no part in because of my aversion to custard. The red bean was very PB&J reminiscent but with a bean'ier texture and sans the PB and the melon bun had a surprising amount of flavor for such a light and airy puffed pastry. The service was swift and sweet and the prices were perfect and more than reasonable. I'll be back, probably before the holiday weekend is over.

I'm a Hippo House fan, but when it's only the pastries I want (not the groceries) I'd rather go here than Hippo that's located inside the giant, crowded Mitsuwa Market. It's simply more convenient at Bakery Crescent. This is an old-school bakery that offers the very basic items -- anpan (sweet beans), cream pan, choco pan, melon pan, yakisoba pan, sausage pan, raisin pan, mayonnaise pan, choco danish, you name it. They're everyday pastries, nothing special. Each is about $1-$2, which is very reasonable. They also carry packaged crust-less sandwiches, canned/bottled beverages, rolls and bread loafs, etc. Friendly staff. A bit odd to find a Japanese video rental right next to it, though...they share the same entrance. * "pan" = bread **Cash only

Oh, the beaming smile on the very nice lady behind the counter as she noticed me coming back into the shop 1.11 minutes after leaving. "You taste, you taste?" How did she know?! Yes, this place is that dang delicious that I had to run back in to buy more after sitting down and tasting the desserts with my mom in the car. On the way to Mitsuwa, I saw the sign of this bakery on the road and pulled a crazy turn into the parking lot to save time. The strip mall isn't very noticeable as there isn't much there, especially nothing that I had heard of, but I read reviews about this bakery on Yelp and the name sparked in my memory, so I had to stop in and check it out. The bakery is not that big or fancy, but oh my Jesus, when you look at the pastries, your mouth waters. Everything is so delicious looking and so cute! There aren't millions of options, but there is a decent selection...and literally, I don't think you could do any wrong with what you pick. On our first visit before going back in, we got the coffee pastry, melon pan,, and apple pastry. Where do I even start? The melon pan is this soft, bread-like pastry. It is so light and fluffy inside, and it's sweet without being a sugar-ladened "I feel like I just downed 12 pixie stix" sweet. It had a very neat flavor - perhaps melon as in the name suggests? Who knows, but it is delicious. The coffee and apple pastries were both made out of crescent dough, and they just melt in your mouth. Once again, these are definitely sweet, but not some crazy disgusting sweet. You and your mouth and stomach feel so happy afterwards, even when they were trying to eat super healthy (hey, you need a little sweetness once in a while!). After trying these (we sampled...just a little piece [or 2 or 3] of each!), we came back to get the blueberry and cinnamon raisin pastries for the rest of our family. Once again, they were made out of the crescent dough. I didn't taste them, but my father and brother loved them - and they smelled so good! Besides the obvious deliciousness factor and prettiful presentation, the way the lady put each individual pastry into a clear plastic bag before putting it into the big bag - obvious care because it wasn't just dumped in! The pastries were about 1.50 ish each, give or take, which may be a little more than buying a pack of 10 for like 4 bucks at Jewel, but one) no one should be eating 10 and two) these actually taste AMAZING, not just "good". There were also some Asian drinks along the wall (this is a Japanese bakery I believe)' and some bread loaves on the wall behind me. The loaves we're kinda pricey (I noticed $3.50 for one of them), but they looked divine and were puffy and soft, so they must be tried one of these days. On the way out, it looked like there were lunch dishes you could buy, but I'm not exactly sure what it was; I was here for the yummy sweets anyways! Best part - I didn't want to eat the whole pastry (ies) in one sitting, so I've had a piece every day. I bought them on Sunday, and they are still soft! I will definitely be returning :D

One thing I miss about living in Japan is all the delicious bakeries! Having said that, Bakery Crescent is delish! Everything they have, from the shoku-pan to kashi-pan is well worth trying, and buying again! They also make sandwiches with wonderful, authentic Japanese flavor, and bring out new items from time to time. Every bread here is amazing, and as close as it gets to the bakeries in Japan. Don't waste your time elsewhere!

So glad I had a chance to come here last weekend on a lark! My mom, brother and I would always come here for a treat, if we were in the neighborhood. I remember this being better than the Hippo Pastry shop in Mitsuwa (Yaohan for us old schoolers), but haven't been there in a while either. I had the curry doughnut, which is basically a pork (or maybe chicken?) cutlet covered in curry, then covered in doughnut batter, fried, and covered with sugar. And I think there was some coconut flakes involved, too. Basically a Willy Wonka's meal-in-a-pill, free heart attack included! My friends shared a pastry filled with chocolate, which they said was deliciously light and fluffy, yet crisp. And everything is basically under $2, which is a steal! On a random note, I remember them having awesome tarts or cakes with fresh fruit glazed in sugar, but they didn't know what I was talking about... maybe it was under a different owner... Or maybe it was the place next door?

A Japanese bakery next to Mont Blanc ( yelp.com/biz/frNjerY6tJB… ). Mont Blanc has cakes while Crescent has 'kashi-pan' which is various Japanese pastry creations. This place used to be more happening a decade ago, but currently is struggling. They recently made it so that you now need to use Crescent's entrance to go to the Japanese video rental store next door, perhaps in an attempt to increase traffic through their store. Hippo ( yelp.com/biz/QkAMmMg0vm4… ) inside Mitsuwa has far more selections and bread is fresher.

My quest for pastries brought me to this little hideaway next to Boston Blackies and Mitsuwa. Typical of most Japanese operations, Crescent is clean, and the staff so polite from whom the Chinatown folks could take lessons. The selection is not huge but sufficient to satisfy my yearning for sweet bean paste pastries. I chose the Danish with sweet bean over the anpan, which is a bread dough. While Asian Danish are never flaky like what one comes to expect from traditional Danish, the dough nevertheless is as soft and chewy as I remember. It also comes with a little sprinkling of sesame and sweet whipped cream. The curry pan is just as flavorful. Best of all, the prices are affordable, with nothing over $2. I may have found my piece of pastry heaven finally in the burbs.

I thought their bakery products are better than the ones from hippo. After being faith customer of hippo for almost 10 years, I jumped ship & am now shopping here. The different bakery products looked to be done with more consideration than the ones from hippo, i.e. not over fried or burnt. Love it!

They make delicious pastries - a croissant filled with red bean paste and whipped cream topped with sesame seeds; or slices of strawberry and whipped cream on top of a puff pastry. It's so light and delicate. I really prefer their variety over the selection at Hippo.
